Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July! It's a day to celebrate our freedom and independence. I'm not saying that these United States are perfect, but we do have a lot to be grateful for. I often think of the liberties we enjoy here, in this age, that could easily be taken for granted. We get to decide where we live, what we do for work and play, what we wear, what we eat, who our friends and romantic partners are, how, when and if to have children, what religion, if any, to practice... and we have the freedom to make mistakes learn from them. Sometimes we get overwhelmed by all the choices we are free to make!

It is such a blessing to have multiple appealing options in life, a treat to choose our favorite or what seems to be the best at the time, and make so many choices throughout our lives. I believe that with all these wonderful choices comes responsibility. Responsibility to consider the consequences of our actions for our future selves, for others, and for our planet.

Happy freedom to dream and take steps towards our goals day!

Wherever you are celebrating, may you revel in the moment, toast your family and friends, and appreciate the many freedoms you enjoy.

Today is Germany Unity Day, so it’s an important holiday in my new home. This commemorates the events of 30 years ago, within our lifetime, when East and West Germany were reunited. Usually I teach a couple of ballet classes on Thursday afternoons, but today I took it easy and thought I would also post this blog, the start of what could be a series about how I came to know this beautiful country. My history with Germany and German culture is actually pretty new. National Poetry Month 2020 Day 22: Innocence & Impulse

Happy Earth Day! Oops, already shared my one explicitly environmental poem on day 20… Still deeply concerned about the state of our planet and keen to preserve our ecosystem for future generations of humans and all of the creatures. What actions will you take to protect habitat, reduce your footprint, and cherish the earth today?  I suppose a sense of wonder at creation is related to a sense of responsibility and stewardship, so poetry- wise my themes of the day are innocence and exploration, reverence and discovery. Pointe Shoes Poem

I thought I'd try something a bit different in my blog today, and start sharing some of the poetry I have written. Poems have gotten me through some of the most elated and most depressed points in my life, and have a magical way of distilling the spirit of a moment. It's a bit scary sharing such a vulnerable creation, but since the point of this blog is to be transparent and share my process and hopefully inspire others on their path, then it makes complete sense to share such works. I wrote this poem when I was starting out in my teaching credential program a couple years ago, by way of introduction to an important object that represents my path.
