What do I have to show for my time since my terminal degree? Well...I taught at UH Manoa while I was there, then went on to Hawai’i Tokai International College, UH Windward Community College, Kaiser High School, Dole Middle School, King Intermediate, a number of private schools as a regular substitute teacher (Mid-Pacific Institute, Assets High School, and several others), two public elementary schools as a part of STEPS to Success, and the Movement Center (a nonprofit performing arts school).  I directed TMC’s annual summer show, “Dancing the Silver Screen,” got my HI State Secondary Teaching Credential and TESOL. Rad Radtour 2019

Last year, when I was just getting to know my girlfriend Ela long-distance having met in Cologne in the summer, she went on a beautiful bicycle journey with her stepdad’s family, the Wassers, and I enviously looked on. Turns out they do a tour every year, rotating the planning to different family members each time, and the destination is a surprise to all but the organizers. Once we officially began dating, I hoped that I would have the opportunity to join in the future, and indeed, I did! The Radtour was as glorious as I had dreamed of, everyone welcoming towards me and the cycling delightful! My “new” bicycle is an 80’s silver Hercules which we got out of the basement, one of Ela’s ex-girlfriends brother’s cycle corpses collected there in years past. We tuned “Herc” up for the mission with a bath, lubed chain, new tires, and a new saddle and she performed beautifully. I got to put my rusty-but-recovering bicycling skills to the test! National Poetry Month 2020 Day 16: “The Scarlatti Tilt” & “Free Year”

I love how poetry can say so much with so few words, and so I got a couple of quickies for you today. My Dad kindly gifted me a couple of his collections of Richard Brautigan’s poetry from the 60s, “Revenge of the Lawn” and “Trout Fishing in America,” and I enjoyed their prosey and sometimes absurd lines in my youth (and now!).  The Scarlatti Tilt By Richard Brautigan “It’s very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who is learning to play the violin.” That’s what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.   In 2018, when I thought I was turning 37, it was actually my 36th birthday. I even told a friend, wrongly, how old I would be turning the next day and had to then correct myself, having done the non-complicated arithmetic.
